Essex Shipbuilding Sometime around the middle 1600s, a man launched a wooden vessel into the salt marsh that connects what is now known as Essex to the Atlantic Ocean. Three hundred and fifty years later, Essex holds a place in maritime history for having built over 4,000 vessels and more two-masted schooners than any town in the world. At its peak in the mid 1800s, Essex harbored 15 shipyards, launched 50 ships a year, and was the production center of the North American fishing fleet. While machination and importation largely changed the face of shipbuilding during the early to mid 1900s, the art of building wooden vessels is still kept alive today by a few noble Essex men such as Harold Burnham, who in the Summer of 2003 launched his most recent schooner Fame. |
